I'm not sure about that either. Alcoa and Maryville (especially MHS) have less D1 talent than those two have lately, but the coaching would win more times than not IMO. It kind of shocked me when I saw Oscar Smith play on TV to open the season last year with some of the things the kids were doing that were just dumb, bad technique, and just wrong. You don't see that with teams like Maryville. They're fundamentally sound and don't do things that cause you to lose games. That's a reflection of a coach like Quarles.
Re: Your High School Football Team
im not disagreeing with that at all, its sad to see those kids with true D1 talent have to deal with those terrible coaches. OS is the worst, they had a team chock full of D1 talent, and could look like a crunch bunch team at times.
but i think on sheer talent alone, PH/OS beats MY/AL 6 times outta 10.
its also worth noting that the VA schools have almost double (? is that right guys?) the kids maryville or alcoa have.
but it would be awesome to see DB or SS play those big time VA schools, maybe it would take their arrogance down a couple notches after giving up 50+ points.
Re: Your High School Football Team
I watched a good portion of TNs state finals last year. Good games, but I think I have saw better teams in VA overall.
Re: Your High School Football Team
I dunno man, those Memphis-area teams are for real.
i dont think the memphis-area teams would rail the VA teams, not at all, but I think they would be great games.
Memphis is truly a hotbed for HS football, not as good as it was 10 years ago but its still good.
but NOVA is a hotbed too, a hidden one that people overlook.
people wonder why VT can compete without getting hte big name recruits from FL or GA or MS or LA, but they get serious talent from the Chesapeake Bay
Re: Your High School Football Team
Talent level, VA is ahead by a large margin. It's not even close.
I think some of the regular powers like Maryville being in a rebuilding mode kind of weakened TN's teams last year. I watched 2-3 of the state games last year and there was definately a drop off from what had been displayed the past 5-10 years.
Re: Your High School Football Team
I noticed taht with some of the Memphis teams as well, they were good but nowhere near as good as ive seen them.
VA is really up there in terms of producing D1 talent, behind states like CA, TX,FL,GA, OH, PA, and maybe MS or LA, VA is right there.
Our area is not great, but the state of VA past Richmond are GREAT FB teams
Re: Your High School Football Team
Agreed, and to me it has fell off some in the past couple of years too compared to what it was 10 years ago. Generally comparing similar size schools, VA's top teams are better than TN's top teams, but its definitely not a rule. Generally VA falls in the top 7-10 states as far as producing D1 talent.
Re: Your High School Football Team
I think only MS or GA have more D1 athletes per capita, CA TX and FL all have tons of people, they have more D1 athletes because there are more kids.
VA is a hotbed that people often overlook as well.
I wouldnt be surprised in the next few years to see the big boys (UF, Bama, OU, UTexas, ((UT already does to an extent, so does Clemson)), USC, etc..) really working NOVA hard, and bring in more kids to big time schools.*
The more VA kids that go on and produce in the NFL and during their college careers, the more schools that will come and try to poach the talent from VT's back yard.
*NOTE
Listen VT nuthuggers I am NOT saying VT isnt a big boy, but they already recruit this area, and they arent really national title contenders most years like OU or UTexas or USC or UF
Re: Your High School Football Team
I think if you look at the VA top 10 this year there are some pretty big OOS programs starting to try and get a foothold now.
Re: Your High School Football Team
oh yeah, but this year was the first year I can remember the really big schools coming to VA for top talent.
Philip Sims going to Alabama, Justin Hunter to Tennessee, Evan Hailes to Penn State, Jeremiah Attaochu to GT, but this is just the beginning.
